Over the last few years, dashboards have become more than just a system for experts – more and more casual users are leveraging dashboards to prepare and make decisions. Still, a main difficulty of casual users interacting with dashboards is expressing their thoughts and intentions using the system functionalities. And if casual users are unable to interact with a dashboard in a effective manner, it is unlikely that they can extract the information they need and act upon them.
A promising approach to address this problem is to enhance the current capabilities of dashboards with a speech based interaction facilitated by a conversational user interface (CUI). CUIs enable users to interact with an dashboard using natural language, just like engaging in a conversation with another human being. Therefore, conversational dashboards have the potential to facilitate effective use of dashboards for more than experts.
